Increased flexibility 1

Increased flexibility can be a benefit of massage

Losing flexibility can lead to a limitation in movement and an increase in possible injury. A massage could help you increase your flexibility naturally and effectively.

How do people lose flexibility?

A loss in flexibility can happen in a number of ways. Sometimes it can be a result of a sedentary lifestyle and an under use of the body’s potential. Sometimes a loss of flexibility is because of the opposite reason. An overuse of muscles can lead to tightness and a reduction in movement.

When can a massage help?

We regularly see people who are looking to increase their flexibility. In almost all cases, massage can help them in achieving this goal. There are circumstances that keep on cropping up that have caused the loss of flexibility. The most common one we see is pregnancy (which isn’t surprising as we are pregnancy massage specialists.) Carrying around the extra weight often leads to aches and pains which can in turn lead to a loss in flexibility.

After particularly vigorous exercise there can be delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) which is a tightness in the muscles and can get quite painful for some people. That tightness can reduce movement and flexibility but a massage can significantly improve this.

Benefits of massage for increasing flexibility

Promotes healing

This may tie in with stress reduction but people who are more relaxed, generally, get less sick less often than those who don't.

Increased flexibility

When muscles and tendons are helped to ease off you could find you experience increased flexibility.

Maximise performance

If you have an event coming up or have just completed one, massage could make a big difference to your performance and your recovery.

Reduces pain

If you suffer with headaches, neck, shoulder or back pain, massage therapy could help to alleviate your symptoms and provide relief.

Ease tight muscles

Massage can stimulate blood flow to areas of the body where it might be particularly needed and help you recover from injury.

Improved sleep

The various styles, strokes and techniques of massage are ideal for helping muscles to ease off and soften.

Which massage is best for increasing flexibility?

Some people prefer a harder massage style to tackle muscle tightness. Others prefer a softer, more soothing approach. We are pleased to offer a variety of massage styles to suit all needs.

A Swedish massage is a full body massage and is a great way to let go of stress and to unwind. With this can then also come the added benefit of helping you sleep better, among many other possible benefits.
A deep tissue massage therapy session works on the muscles and connective tissue at a deeper level and can assist in bringing relief to muscle soreness as well as speed up recovery for aches, pains and injuries.

I have had many massages, but this was by far the best! I spoke at length with Fi before the appointment, explaining how I am struggling with migraines during pregnancy. During the massage, I could tell that Fi really took on board my problem and worked hard around the tension areas. It really felt that she knew exactly how to target the problem areas of a migraine-head! I was so relaxed I almost fell asleep a few times! And I left feeling so much better. Fi made sure I was comfortable and offered extra towels for support under my shoulders which I hadn’t had before. She really couldn’t have done any more. The room was lovely and warm and the towels that had been warming on the radiator were heavenly and were even swapped half way through for an extra treat! Can not recommend enough for a pregnancy massage / massage to help with migraines and tension!

I had a Post natal Rest and relax massage gifted to me on my baby shower, I have to say it was one of the most amazing massages I’ve ever gotten. I had a lot of mummy guilt leaving my son but honestly feel so much more relaxed which is good for both me and my baby!

I've suffered with sciatica and a stiff achy back and shoulders for many years which was considerably worse during and after my pregnancy. I booked in for a postnatal massage with Fi Hennessy who took time asking me about problematic and sensitive areas, welcomed me to the Sheffield Wellness Centre (amazing place!) and made sure I was comfortable and well looked after.Fi is a remarkable lady who exudes warmth and definitely knows her way around a postnatal body. The relief was incredible, I felt relaxed and peaceful and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. I had a 1hr session and booked my second appointment before leaving - these sessions have now become part of my self care routine. Fi has a way of making you feel body confident regardless of size or wobbly bits which was inspiring. My mind and body are very thankful for these sessions with Fi 🙂

Your massage benefits questions answered

Many people are intrigued by massage therapy and the potential benefits that it can bring into a person’s life. We have gathered some of the more common questions about the benefits of massage therapy below but if you have a question that isn’t answered here you can contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible with an answer.

Relaxing tired and sore muscles. Flowing strokes, with varied pressure, gentle joint manipulations and various techniques – help return muscles to their original state of relaxation. Easing out the fibres to allow the muscle to work from a place of efficiency and not over strung.

Easing aches and pains from poor posture, working from home, caring for children and babies – holding out posture while we work or care for babies is one of the key reasons people come to have a massage.

Your therapist will work with your body to help massage away the feelings of pain and soreness. You will leave feeling lighter, taller, more open and invigorated.

Helping a variety of ailments, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, sciatica etc. Massage is not just for muscles! Your body works together as an amazing collection of fibres, nerves, bones and amazing substances.

When you experience an illness or condition which affects your body, many systems are affected along the way. A sore hip can result in a pressure on the opposite knee as you compensate for your hip not functioning well. Massage can help to ease the pain felt through your body as a whole, not just the affected area.

Massage decreases the stress hormone known as cortisol. At the same time it increases serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is essential for the production of a hormone responsible for control of the sleep/wake cycle, melatonin.

Anxiety and other challenges can cause us to hold tension in our body because we are worried, on high alert, unable to rest and relax properly. This can in turn cause issues with digestion and sleep.

Massage works to allow this state of anxiety and high alert to calm and switch off, allowing the restorative ‘rest and digest’ phase to switch on. This helps digestion work better, easing symptoms of IBS for example, as well as improving sleep and helping your body heal and repair.
