Relaxation is a benefit of massage

So many people these days don’t make the time to relax. Some people have the time but don’t know how to relax. A massage could be just what is needed.

Do massages help you relax?

Massage therapy reduces stress by decreasing the stress hormone cortisol and increasing feel good hormones. Massage can relieve stress by lowering your heart rate and increasing the feeling of physical and mental relaxation. Once stress levels are decreased, symptoms of anxiety and depression can reduce so that you feel calm, collected and completely relaxed.

When can a massage help?

There are so many different circumstances where massage could help bring about an improvement physically, mentally and emotionally which all lead to better sleep. You might be struggling to sleep after a traumatic life event, suffering with depression and insomnia or someone that holds stress in their neck which is causing discomfort at night. It is possible that massage could help you on the road to recovery.

Benefits of massage for improving sleep

Relaxation

Massage therapy focuses on muscle relaxation through touch, this will help you thoroughly relax and feel soothed.

Promotes healing

This may tie in with stress reduction but people who are more relaxed, generally, get less sick less often than those who don't.

Reduces stress and anxiety

Regular massages can offer a natural aid to reducing stress and anxiety and alleviating depression symptoms.

Decreases heart rate

The release of tension after a massage reduces the pressure put on the heart to circulate blood around the body properly.

Eases tension

Massage can stimulate blood flow to areas of the body where it might be particularly needed and help you to relax.

Improved sleep

The various styles, strokes and techniques of massage are ideal for helping muscles to ease off and soften.

I have had many massages, but this was by far the best! I spoke at length with Fi before the appointment, explaining how I am struggling with migraines during pregnancy. During the massage, I could tell that Fi really took on board my problem and worked hard around the tension areas. It really felt that she knew exactly how to target the problem areas of a migraine-head! I was so relaxed I almost fell asleep a few times! And I left feeling so much better. Fi made sure I was comfortable and offered extra towels for support under my shoulders which I hadn’t had before. She really couldn’t have done any more. The room was lovely and warm and the towels that had been warming on the radiator were heavenly and were even swapped half way through for an extra treat! Can not recommend enough for a pregnancy massage / massage to help with migraines and tension!

Your massage benefits questions answered

Many people are intrigued by massage therapy and the potential benefits that it can bring into a person’s life. We have gathered some of the more common questions about the benefits of massage therapy below but if you have a question that isn’t answered here you can contact us and we will get back to you as soon as possible with an answer.

Relaxing tired and sore muscles. Flowing strokes, with varied pressure, gentle joint manipulations and various techniques – help return muscles to their original state of relaxation. Easing out the fibres to allow the muscle to work from a place of efficiency and not over strung.

Easing aches and pains from poor posture, working from home, caring for children and babies – holding out posture while we work or care for babies is one of the key reasons people come to have a massage.

Your therapist will work with your body to help massage away the feelings of pain and soreness. You will leave feeling lighter, taller, more open and invigorated.

Helping a variety of ailments, such as high blood pressure, arthritis, sciatica etc. Massage is not just for muscles! Your body works together as an amazing collection of fibres, nerves, bones and amazing substances.

When you experience an illness or condition which affects your body, many systems are affected along the way. A sore hip can result in a pressure on the opposite knee as you compensate for your hip not functioning well. Massage can help to ease the pain felt through your body as a whole, not just the affected area.

Over the past 10 years, studies have consistently shown that regular massage sessions lowers the heart rate and both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Massage decreases the stress hormone known as cortisol. At the same time it increases serotonin, a neurotransmitter that is essential for the production of a hormone responsible for control of the sleep/wake cycle, melatonin.

Anxiety and other challenges can cause us to hold tension in our body because we are worried, on high alert, unable to rest and relax properly. This can in turn cause issues with digestion and sleep.

Massage works to allow this state of anxiety and high alert to calm and switch off, allowing the restorative ‘rest and digest’ phase to switch on. This helps digestion work better, easing symptoms of IBS for example, as well as improving sleep and helping your body heal and repair.
