Your general massage questions answered
First of all know that nearly everyone has something about their body which they feel a little self conscious about. Secondly, your massage therapist absolutely does not mind about what you might mind about.
That said they will treat any concerns you have with sympathy and compassion. Some things might be important to know about in order to give you an appropriate and safe massage, but this should be picked up with any health pre screening.
If you would prefer the massage therapist does not touch an area of your body at all, please just say, this is not a problem at all.
Some people can find massage so relaxing that they do fall asleep, especially pregnant and post natal people! This is always a great compliment to the therapist, however if you fall asleep right at the start of the massage, your therapist may gently wake you so you can enjoy the rest of the session.
Natural bodily responses to massage can include vocalising as stress and tension releases and expulsions of wind or drool. Your therapist knows this can happen and takes every sign of relaxation as a positive one. As the rooms are stripped, cleaned and sanitised between clients, you can rest assured your signs of relaxation will not cause an issue for anyone.
Sometimes natural conversation flows at the start of a massage which then fades as the relaxation deepens, however there is no expectation that you must chat throughout.
You are most welcome to talk if you need to and certainly for some deep tissue techniques the therapist will be checking in with you about depth, pressure and comfort. But if you would prefer not to chat – you don’t have to.
Your massage therapist should check in with you regarding pressure to give you the opportunity to ask for more or less pressure. They should also be checking non verbal signals such a signs of relaxation, breath holding, flinching or giggling.
Please do feel free to simply say you need more or less pressure, your massage therapist will love this feedback.
For your comfort and to avoid over heating, you will be advised to undress to your underwear. You will be draped with towels and plenty of coverings for modesty and warmth. If undressing is posing a problem for your massage please speak with your therapist prior to your session.
