The history of hot stone therapy

Hot stone massage therapy began some 5,000 years ago in India by Hindus as part of the traditional medicine system known as Ayurveda. 3,000 years later the practice was adopted in China where "Bian" stones were used while burning mugwort to treat disease, and digestion was improved by placing heated, shaped stones on their abdomens. Hot stone healing later made its way to Hawaii where medicine shamans, or "Kahunas" as they are traditionally known, would wrap heated lava rocks in leaves to bring pain relief to the body.

What happens during a hot stone massage?

A hot stone massage will usually begin with a traditional Swedish massage to relax any tension in your muscles. Your therapist will then place the warm stones the main acupressure points along your body. These areas include your spine, chest and stomach as well as your face, palms and feet. Your therapist may also use the hot stones as an extension of their hands when massaging and use techniques such as long strokes, circular movements, tapping, kneading and vibration to warm and relax your muscles and allow deeper pressure to be applied during your massage.

I had never had a hot stone massage before, Fi explained in great detail what it can do for me and how it should feel. Totally made me feel at ease. The treatment totally surpassed all my expectations. The stones glide so well over the body, that combined with the warmth they give out and the expert handling of them made me feel more relaxed then I’ve been in a long time as well as making my aches and pains feel better, relaxing my tense muscles. This is one treatment I will aim to have on a more regular basis. Thank you so much Fi

Fi was incredibly respectful and professional and the massage was gorgeous and so relaxing. The space is beautiful and tranquil, I was offered everything I could need, and the obvious focus on boundaries and consent made me feel totally at ease. Couldn’t recommend Fi enough. 🥰

Update - had a hot stone massage with Fi which I was a little apprehensive about as I hadn’t had one before.. and oh my goddd I would never get anything else now!! Fi was communicative and always made sure the stones were the right temperature and that I was comfortable. Amazing experience. Next time I want an Indian head massage. 😍

What are the benefits of a hot stone massage?

  • Deep relaxation

Adding heat to specific areas on the body enhances the feelings of deep relaxation and tranquility.

  • Relieves joint stiffness

Those who suffer with body aches, muscular neck or back pain will benefit from increased blood flow and flexibility to the affected areas.

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

Regular hot stone massages can offer a natural aid to reducing stress and anxiety and alleviating depression symptoms.

  • Promotes better sleep

Ideal for those who have difficulty sleeping or suffer with insomnia. A study on patients undergoing hemodialysis found significant improvement in sleep quality.

  • Reduces chronic pain

Those suffering from fibromyalgia, arthritis and chronic pain conditions can enjoy the effects of heated stones without excessive massage pressure.

  • Feel good

Enjoying a hot stone massage and gentle touch in a peaceful setting can help you feel better, happier and calmer.

What issues could a hot stone massage help address?

A hot stone massage is a form of alternative medicine massage therapy and bodywork involving the placement of a number of either heated or cooled stones to the body for the purpose of pain relief, relaxation and therapy.

  • Anxiety and depression

Researchers did a study on the benefits of massage for those suffering with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and found the regular massages and relaxing surroundings improved their symptoms. The overall benefits of massage therapy to your mood may also help address symptoms of depression.

  • Pain relief

If you suffer with fibromyalgia, arthritis or have trouble with headaches, neck, shoulder or back pain, Swedish massage therapy could help to alleviate your symptoms and provide short term relief.

  • Mobility and circulation

The gentle massaging of muscles and ligaments allows for a greater range of motion to be possible in most cases. Massage also promotes blood circulation which means many people feel more energetic after a massage.

  • Emotional and physical stress

Both emotional and physical stress causes muscles to tense. Booking in for a Swedish massage can help you to relax, alleviate the tension built up in muscles and help to improve your mood - it's also a bit of time for yourself where you can shut the stress of daily life out and bask in some much needed me-time.

  • Sleep quality

Relaxation techniques are recommended for sleep disorders, so if hot stone massages help you relax it may be worth including them as part of your self-care routine.

  • Relaxation

Hot stone massage therapy focuses on muscle relaxation through the use of heat, this will help you thoroughly relax and feel soothed. If you need to relax more, try making hot stone massages part of your self-care routine.
