Information about Indian head massage

The history of Indian head massage
Champissage is better known as Indian head massage, an alternative medicine massage. In Champissage, the upper back, shoulders, neck, head and face are massaged.
Indian head massage was brought to the West by Narendra Mehta MBE in the 1970s. He went on to establish the London Centre of Indian Champissage, based in North London. After his death, his wife Mrs Kundan Mehta and their godson Moses Chundi took over the running of the Centre, which now trains students across the globe.
What happens in an Indian head massage session?
The treatment focuses on the various acupressure points in the shoulders, neck and head. An Indian head massage combines brisk friction movements with slower petrissage movements which can stimulate blood flow to the scalp which can improve the hair making it shinier and healthier. There are added benefits of stress reduction and anxiety reduction through this form of massage.

What are the benefits of an Indian head massage?
Improve hair health
Indian head massage stimulates the nerves around the head area which exfoliates the scalp and nourishes the hair. Not only will this help you to relax, it can improve mental and physical health.
Headaches and migraines
Indian head massage promotoes circulation in and around the head and shoulder area which can alleviate the tension of headaches and migraines by balancing out the energy flow.
Improved blood circulation
Massage promotes blood circulation which means many people feel more energetic after a massage.
Reduces stress
Indian head massage relieves stress and tension within the body by promoting relaxation and a deep sense of well being.
Unblock sinuses
Indian head massage is thought to help sinus pain and congestion by relieving pressure, stimulating circulation and helping the sinus drain.
Reduce pain and stiffness
Indian head massage is given to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It will help calm, de-stress, revitalise and uplift your spirits while relaxing tense muscles and easing stiffness.
What issues could Indian head massage help address?
An Indian head massage is particularly good at helping reduce stress and anxiety. Many people don't appreciate just how much tension can be held in the face, neck and shoulders. An Indian head massage is an excellent way to directly soothe away these stresses, leaving you feeling calmer and more relaxed. An Indian head massage is also very accessible because you can have the massage sitting or lying down and can be done with or without oils and you don't have to undress it makes the massage very accessible to most people.
Relaxation and stress relief
Indian head massage uses the Ayurvedic concept which goes beyond the limits of healing and places emphasis on the balance of mind and body. The experience is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving a feeling of increased energy, concentration and revitalisation.
Decreases pain
If you suffer with recurring headaches, migraines, sinusitis or neck, shoulder/upper back pain, Indian head massage therapy could help to alleviate your symptoms and provide short term relief.
Anxiety and depression
Researchers did a study on the benefits of massage for those suffering with Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and found the regular massages and relaxing surroundings improved their symptoms. The overall benefits of massage therapy to your mood may also help address symptoms of depression.
Thinning hair
Indian head massage has been shown to aid in thickening hair according to this study. Not enough research has been done as to whether Indian head massage can promote new hair growth but massage to the scalp and head increases nourishment and oxygen to the hair follicle which in turn stimulates healthier hair.
Sleep quality
Relaxation techniques are recommended for sleep disorders, so if Swedish massages help you relax it may be worth including them as part of your self-care routine.
Reduce swelling
Indian head massage aids lymphatic drainage by stimulating circulation, encouraging the natural drainage of the lymph. It also helps in bringing new nutrients and oxygen to cells. It can be used to treat swelling and post-traumatic facial oedema after bruising, fracture or surgical procedure.
