Pregnancy massage

Pregnant people are perfectly qualified to know what it’s like to need to really relax! Getting that relaxation can be tough sometimes which is why seeing a specialist pregnancy massage therapist can make all the difference. You might regularly get a massage, or this might be the first time, but having a pregnancy massage can work wonders for your adapting body.

Information about pregnancy massage

Pregnancy massage for your adapting body

Pregnancy massage is safe from the moment you’re pregnant but most practitioners would prefer to see you after the first trimester is over and you’ve had your first scan. Those first 12 weeks can be pretty miserable if you have sickness and tiredness and the thought of being massaged is probably far from your mind! Once you begin to feel a bit better and are reassured about the progress of the pregnancy, regular massage can be a real treat.

Pregnancy massage is possible in different positions

Early on you may feel comfortable to continue lying on your front in the prone position. With suitable pillows and bolsters for comfort this can be perfectly safe as the fetus is safely snuggled deep inside your uterus and protected by your pelvis and layers of muscle and fatty tissue.

As the pregnancy progresses you will most likely become more comfortable in a side lying position. The therapist will set up the massage table with pillows and bolsters to support you.

There will usually be a pillow for your head and one to support your top knee and ankle, this helps to keep the pelvis in a neutral position. This means more comfort for you. There will also usually be a pillow or rolled towel to cuddle with your top arm, this keeps your shoulder open and neutral and also provides a bit of comfort and modesty for your top half.

You will feel comfortable, supported and cared for

The massage for your back will be done in two halves, with you supported to turn part way through the massage to access the other side. The massage therapist will use a variety of strokes to relax and relieve the muscles in your back, shoulders and hips.

If you are not yet in the third trimester and are comfortable to do so, you may lie on your back in the supine position for a short amount of time to have legs, feet and head massaged. It’s not recommended to lie on your back once you’re into the third trimester because it’s just not comfortable. Some massage tables can lift up to allow you to sit semi reclined which is perfectly safe and a nice option to round off the massage.

Pregnancy massage can be a wonderful way to spend a bit of time investing in you, your changing body and bonding with your bump before you get to meet them. Don’t forget, once baby is here, postnatal massage can form a valuable part of your healing from birth.

I came to Fi as a first timer to massage and I'll definitely be coming back soon! She was really good at explaining things and clearly knows her stuff. In addition to an excellent massage that loosened up my tight shoulders she also helped loosen my tight injured back up. Fi gave me some good tips and advice on where to seek further help to avoid injuring myself again which I really appreciated.... I walked away very happy with my experience and couldn't recommend her more!read more

What a treat! I had a 90 minute pregnancy massage with Fi and she is just fabulous. I left feeling physically and mentally lighter and very calm and refreshed. She is a true professional and expert at what she does. I will certainly be booking in another massage (or two!) before baby arrives. Having not had a massage for a long time it made me realise that my well-being should certainly be... prioritised more often and it was worth every penny. See you again soon Fi! xread more

I want to Fi for a pregnancy massage and it was incredible. I was suffering with painful back and shoulders as well as needing vital relaxation. Fi took the time to listen and understand my needs, was thorough and thoughtful in her approach. Her knowledge and passion around pregnancy and post natal care is incredible. I felt cared for and safe at all times. From giving me the time to get myself... together pre massage, to the cleverly placed pillows for additional comfort and the time post massage. Nothing ever felt rushed or hurried. The massage itself was one of the best I've had (and I've had many). My comfort was considered through out and the environment was so cosy. It was exactly what I needed to help me reset and face the oncoming pregnancy challenges in a positive state of mind.I will definately be going back for my post natal care package 🙂read more

I have had many massages, but this was by far the best! I spoke at length with Fi before the appointment, explaining how I am struggling with migraines during pregnancy. During the massage, I could tell that Fi really took on board my problem and worked hard around the tension areas. It really felt that she knew exactly how to target the problem areas of a migraine-head! I was so relaxed I almost... fell asleep a few times! And I left feeling so much better. Fi made sure I was comfortable and offered extra towels for support under my shoulders which I hadn’t had before. She really couldn’t have done any more. The room was lovely and warm and the towels that had been warming on the radiator were heavenly and were even swapped half way through for an extra treat! Can not recommend enough for a pregnancy massage / massage to help with migraines and tension!read more

I had a pregnancy massage today with Fi and can honestly say it was the best, most nurturing massage I've ever had. Fi took time to explain what the massage would entail, made sure I was at my most comfortable with pillows, sheets and temperature, and then gave such a fantastic massage, really concentrating on my problem areas. I was so relaxed I drifted off, which I never normally do! Will... definitely come again for a post-natal version.read more

Had a wonderful massage with Lucy. She was warm and professional, and spent time beforehand checking what I was looking for, any areas of tension etc. I felt really comfortable, the room was soothing, the pressure was just right (she checked during the massage, which I always appreciate because too much pressure makes me sore and achey for days after and it's not always easy to pipe up and say so... at the time), and as the hour went on I could feel the tension melting away. I went for stress relief and relaxation, and came out feeling like I was floating. I'll definitely be back.read more

Wow, what an absolute treat it was having a postnatal massage with Fi. Having the space held for me to let my mind and body relax was extremely restorative, and so needed when I spend my life looking after two small children. I'm so grateful to Fi for helping me carve out that bit of me-time and showing me that massage is not an indulgence but an essential bit of self-care.

I had never had a hot stone massage before, Fi explained in great detail what it can do for me and how it should feel. Totally made me feel at ease. The treatment totally surpassed all my expectations. The stones glide so well over the body, that combined with the warmth they give out and the expert handling of them made me feel more relaxed then I’ve been in a long time as well as making my... aches and pains feel better, relaxing my tense muscles. This is one treatment I will aim to have on a more regular basis. Thank you so much Firead more

Absolutely incredible massage from Fi today. After having a really difficult week Fi was able to literally reset my nervous system, I left feeling 100x better than when I arrived. Fi has such an intuitive style, I felt like she read what I needed from my body perfectly. At 37 weeks pregnant I didn’t know how massage would feel on my aching limbs and pelvic girdle pain but it was absolutely magic,... I feel so incredibly relaxed and the pelvic pain has even improved slightly. Fi also gave me some helpful advice with some things I’ve been struggling with through my pregnancy. I've suffered with sciatica and a stiff achy back and shoulders for many years which was considerably worse during and after my pregnancy. I booked in for a postnatal massage with Fi Hennessy who took time asking me about problematic and sensitive areas, welcomed me to the Sheffield Wellness Centre (amazing place!) and made sure I was comfortable and well looked after.Fi is a remarkable lady... who exudes warmth and definitely knows her way around a postnatal body. The relief was incredible, I felt relaxed and peaceful and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. I had a 1hr session and booked my second appointment before leaving - these sessions have now become part of my self care routine. Fi has a way of making you feel body confident regardless of size or wobbly bits which was inspiring. My mind and body are very thankful for these sessions with Fi 🙂read more

Pregnancy Massage Specialist

I’m Fi, the founder of Origin Massage and resident specialist in pregnancy and postnatal massage. As an experienced antenatal educator, surrogate and mother of 2, I am passionate about helping people feel comfortable with their pregnancy, prepared and ready for birth and supporting new parents afterwards through massage.

I specialise in pregnancy massage because I am familiar and comfortable with pregnant bodies. I’ve learned so much through the years, through my own body and through working with many hundreds of families in Sheffield. I will provide a safe and nurturing place for you to relax, unwind and feel at ease.

My massage therapy services are completely focused on pregnant people and those who have just had a baby. Because I specialise in this area you can be sure of having an relaxing experience that helps you unwind and rest. My post-birth massage therapy services are designed to help you to recover quicker and give you some much needed recuperation.

You are the centre of attention

My whole purpose when I am at work is to ensure that you are comfortable, well looked after and thoroughly enjoy your experience. So much of the pregnancy process is (rightly) focused on the baby you are growing but your health and happiness is also important. I dedicate our time to ensuring that you get that all important time for you to be you. To relax. To unwind. To properly let go of everything.

Alongside my maternity massage services, I also offer post-birth massage treatments. The biggest change your body will experience is the moment your baby is born, and no matter how they are born, your body moves from pregnant to not pregnant. It might not feel it at the time, but this is a relatively short amount of time for such a massive change to your body.

How to book a pregnancy massage session

When you book a session with us, you’ll be seen by one of our professionally trained massage therapists at the Origin Massage studio which is right next door to the Sheffield Wellness Centre. Our location is a small haven of peace and tranquillity to the south of the city centre on Abbeydale Road.

To book your massage session, click the “Book a session” button and choose the type of treatment you would like, select your preferred date and time and confirm using the form.

Your pregnancy massage questions answered

Pregnancy can be stressful enough without needing to worry about pregnancy massage queries. We’ve put together some of our most frequently asked questions to give you a guide, if you have any other questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with Fi Hennessy on 0114 3830405.

Origin Massage is located in Nether Edge and is easily accessed by anyone in East, West and South Sheffield.

Pregnancy massage sessions cost £50.

Post-natal massage sessions cost £40.

It is common for most massage therapists to refuse to give pregnancy massages during the first trimester as there is an increased chance of miscarriage during this time. The second and third trimesters are fine for having a massage as long as it is with someone knowledgeable about birth.

During a regular massage you will typically lay on your front or back and will experience a deep massage all over the body.

During a pregnancy massage, you will lay on either side but not back or front and no deep tissue massage will be attempted on the legs.

A massage in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is not advised. Other reasons to not have a massage are if you have:

  • Morning sickness/nausea
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Pain/cramps

Many women say that the second trimester is the best time for a massage because you are likely to have more energy than the first or third trimesters and, hopefully, your morning sickness will be over.

If you are in any doubt about whether a massage is right for you be sure to discuss your situation with your pregnancy massage therapist, Fi Hennessy.

If you’ve booked an appointment and are wondering what happens during the pregnancy massage, let me take you through it. Prior to the massage appointment you should be told where to go and if you need to bring anything.

I usually advise that you don’t need to bring anything unless you have a favorite cushion or support that would make you feel comfortable. When you arrive your therapist should take time to make you comfortable, give you water, and explain the process to you.

A medical history should be taken to help the therapist understand your particular situation, any medical concerns you may have which may affect how the massage is carried out. For example if you have PGP or SPD you may be worried about getting onto the massage bench or turning over.

The therapist will then advise you on what happens next, how much to undress, how to get on the massage surface and what bolsters will be used. The therapist will be out of the room during this time to give you privacy. You can signal if you are ready or the therapist will knock and ask.

Before the massage begins the therapist will position bolsters and cushions around you to ensure your comfort. The towel or covering will then be secured in such a way that your modesty is preserved but the therapist can access the parts of your body to be massaged, so your back, shoulders and legs for example.

Depending on what you have agreed you may need to turn over part way through. Once the massage is finished the therapist will let you know and will leave the room again to allow you time and privacy to get up and dressed. They should then offer post massage after care advice such as keeping hydrated and resting if needed.

Yes! Going into labour having had regular massages in the build up could mean that you enter labour with less anxiety or stress, aches in joints and pains in muscles could have been reduced and there is some evidence to show that labour outcomes are improved.

Pregnancy changes your body right from the moment you find out you’re pregnant. Ligaments begin the stretch, your uterus swells, hormones change your shape, appetite and need for sleep! Pregnancy hormones such as relaxin and progesterone begin to soften your body, giving rise to pelvic issues such as PGP, or aggravating old injuries that you thought were well healed.

Taking the time to relax, investing in your body rather than carrying on as if nothing had changed will stand you in good stead for your pregnancy and beyond. Muscles often get sore as they compensate for relaxing ligaments, having a pregnancy massage will generate lots of benefits in helping these sore muscles.

A pregnancy massage will also benefit your mind helping you relax, bond with your bump and take time to contemplate upcoming labour and becoming a mum. Pregnancy massage benefits also extend to baby as they benefit from the relaxation you feel, the increase in oxytocin with the skin to skin massage strokes and your general state of well being.

Your comfort is paramount during a pregnancy massage and it might be that you want to know what to wear for a pregnancy massage. As most pregnancy massages will be using an oil on your skin it would be appropriate for the massage therapist to be able to reach your skin.

Your modesty and comfort will be top of the massage therapists mind and towels, drapes and covers will be used to keep you covered and allow the therapist to access only the parts of your body which are being massaged. With that in mind you can wear what you feel comfortable in for the massage.

Once a full history has been taken to allow the massage therapist to understand your needs, they will then give you time and privacy to undress and get onto the massage surface and under the cover provided.

Once you are settled and happy they will re-enter the room and position bolsters and cushions to give you maximum comfort.

Alternative therapies you might like to consider

If you are expecting baby to arrive soon you may like to consider booking in for a post-natal massage to help your body recover.

Giving birth is one of the most physically and mentally demanding experiences a person can go through. To help you on your journey of recovery one of our specialist post-natal massages could be what you need.
A Swedish massage is a full body massage and is a great way to let go of stress and to unwind. With this can then also come the added benefit of helping you sleep better, among many other possible benefits.

Give the gift of massage

Are you are looking for a present that is sure to be warmly received? Are you looking for the perfect baby shower gift? Would you like to give an experience rather than ‘stuff’? When you want to give someone the opportunity to have some time to relax and unwind but you aren’t quite sure what kind of massage they would like a gift card is the ideal option!

You can either gift someone a specific massage treatment, a package or a monetary voucher they can redeem on any treatment at Origin Massage.
