Reiki is a complimentary therapy and can be a wonderful way to unwind, relax and strengthen your spiritual wellbeing and energy. Reiki is more than just another healing technique. The practice of Reiki can unfold into a spiritual path of great depth and beauty.

Information about Reiki

What is Reiki and how does it work?

Reiki was developed in Japan in the 1900’s and the name translates to “universal energy”. It is an energy healing technique based on the Reiki practitioner helping energise and balance the chakra energy of the person they are working with. There can sometimes be gentle touch involved and the process can often lead to deep relaxation, as well as a reduction in stress and anxiety.

What is a chakra?

The concept of the chakra arose in early Sanskrit texts that speak of them both as meditative visualisations combining flowers and mantras and as physical entities in the body. Chakras are various energy focal points in the body and are used in a variety of ancient meditation practices where it is believed to function at their best, your chakras need to stay open, or balanced. If they get blocked, you may experience physical or emotional symptoms related to a particular chakra.

What are the 7 chakras?

The root chakra (Muladhara), is located at the base of your spine. It represents your foundation, security and stability in life and helps you feel grounded and able to withstand challenges.

The sacral chakra (Svadhisthana) is located just below your belly button. This chakra is responsible for your creative and sexual energy as well as how you relate to your emotions and that of others.

The solar plexus chakra (Manipura) is located in your stomach area. It’s responsible for self-esteem and confidence as well as helping you feel in control of your life.
The heart chakra (Anahata) is located near your heart, in the center of your chest. This chakra represents our ability to love and show compassion for others.

The throat chakra (Vishuddha) is located in your throat. This chakra has to do with our ability to communicate verbally.

The third eye chakra (Ajna) is located between your eyes. It represents your gut instinct and is responsible for intuition and imagination.

The crown chakra (Sahasrara) is located at the top of the head. It represents your spiritual connection to yourself, others, and the universe. It also plays a role in your life’s purpose.

I've suffered with sciatica and a stiff achy back and shoulders for many years which was considerably worse during and after my pregnancy. I booked in for a postnatal massage with Fi Hennessy who took time asking me about problematic and sensitive areas, welcomed me to the Sheffield Wellness Centre (amazing place!) and made sure I was comfortable and well looked after.Fi is a remarkable lady who exudes warmth and definitely knows her way around a postnatal body. The relief was incredible, I felt relaxed and peaceful and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. I had a 1hr session and booked my second appointment before leaving - these sessions have now become part of my self care routine. Fi has a way of making you feel body confident regardless of size or wobbly bits which was inspiring. My mind and body are very thankful for these sessions with Fi 🙂

I had a Post natal Rest and relax massage gifted to me on my baby shower, I have to say it was one of the most amazing massages I’ve ever gotten. I had a lot of mummy guilt leaving my son but honestly feel so much more relaxed which is good for both me and my baby!

Benefits of Reiki

Deep relaxation

Reiki will help you to experience a profound level of relaxation. The meditative practice promotes relaxation and a positive mental state through gentle touch.

Emotional tension

Reiki can support you with emotional, physical and mental distress by allowing you to release your stress and tension through deep relaxation.

Anxiety, depression and sleep

A study found that college students who received six 30 minute Reiki sessions reported greater improvements in stress, mood, and sleep (especially those with higher anxiety and depression).

Cancer and other long term illnesses

Though there is no scientific evidence to show that reiki can prevent, treat or cure cancer, or any other disease, some people with cancer use reiki alongside their treatment, as a complementary therapy. Read more.

What issues could Reiki help address?

Reiki practitioners and those receiving the treatment have claimed to have experienced a diverse range of improvements in physical, mental and emotional health. Some of the issues Reiki has been reported to treat include stress, anxiety, depression, low confidence, depression, pain, infertility and fatigue.

Stress reduction

Reiki can help you to unwind, relax and reduce your stress levels. Your Reiki practitioner will work on your energy centres and help to clear negative energies.

Anxiety, depression and low moods

The deep meditative relaxation effects of Reiki may help to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms and improve your mood and energy.

Sleep difficulties

You can expect to feel very relaxed after a Reiki session. This kind of relaxation helps our bodies to sleep better, to heal better, and to think more clearly. It is not uncommon for people to fall asleep entirely during a Reiki session.

Reduce pain

Reiki may help to resolve the emotional aspect of pain by allowing healing energy to flow freely throughout the body, which results in relaxation and reduced pain and tension throughout the body.

Reiki therapists

Katie first became interested in massage 20 years ago during a visit to China and after studying and practicing, she now specialises in offering Chinese energy focused deep tissue massages called Tui Na.

Your Reiki massage questions answered

If you have questions about Reiki, we have answers. If there is something you want to know that is not answered here you can contact us directly and we will help in any way we can.

The most common side effect of Reiki is feeling calm and relaxed. However, a small number of people might feel especially tired or a little weak. Some people get a headache for a while.

It is really down the the individual and what they would like. You can’t overdose on Reiki so there’s nothing to worry about there. Some people have sessions on a weekly basis. Some people have just one session and don’t feel they need any more after that. Have a chat with your Reiki practitioner and they will guide you further.

A one hour Reiki session costs £45 and can be booked online through our booking system.

The best way to prepare for a Reiki session is to ensure that you have had something to eat an hour or two before your session so tummy rumbles or digestion noises don’t interrupt your relaxation.
Wear something loose and comfortable. Ensure you are hydrated.

It is absolutely fine to have Reiki when pregnant. This would be no problem at all. You may also want to consider getting a pregnancy massage as well as Reiki and massage therapy compliment each other very nicely.

Alternative therapies you might like to consider

If you’re looking for something more physically focused then we do have other styles of massage therapies available.
The smooth black volcanic stones are heated and smoothed over you skin and worked into muscles in this wonderfully calming and deeply relaxing treatment that can help to reduce muscle tension and pain.
The soothing sweeping strokes in and Indian Head Massage will focus on your shoulders, neck, face and scalp and can help to ease away stresses and strains, aches and pains.

Give the gift of massage

Are you are looking for a present that is sure to be warmly received? Are you looking for the perfect baby shower gift? Would you like to give an experience rather than ‘stuff’? When you want to give someone the opportunity to have some time to relax and unwind but you aren’t quite sure what kind of massage they would like a gift card is the ideal option!

You can either gift someone a specific massage treatment, a package or a monetary voucher they can redeem on any treatment at Origin Massage.
