Information about Sports massage

The history of sports massage
Sports massage, also known as physio massage, originated in Greece and Rome thousands of years ago. A renowned Roman physician, Galen (AD 30-200), prescribed massage for gladiators both before and after exercising which is one of the earliest record of sports massage. The modern history of sports massages dates back to 1924 in Paris at the Olympic games.
Middle and long distance runner Paavo Nurmi "the flying Finn" attended the games with his own personal sports massage therapist. After winning 5 gold medals in one day with only 30 minute breaks between events, he attributed his success to the massage treatment he'd been receiving.
What happens during a sports massage?
Your sports massage therapist will begin by talking with you about your needs, problem areas and physical history to get a better understanding of your requirements and what you hope to achieve. You might be looking to prepare or recover from a sporting event, rehabilitate from an injury or perhaps your job is creating aches, pains and muscular tension. Your massage therapist will tailor the session to your exact needs.

What are the benefits of a Sports massage?
Deep relaxation
Adding heat to specific areas on the body enhances the feelings of deep relaxation and tranquility.
Decrease muscle spasms
After exercise some people find they get muscle spasms in the days after. Massage could help reduce these spasms.
Increased flexibility
If strenuous activity has lead to aches and pains and a decrease in mobility then a sports massage could really help.
Tackle the DOMS
Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness affects many people after sporting events. A massage can significantly reduce the effect of the DOMS in the days after an event.
What issues could Sports massage help address?
A sports massage can be especially good for athletic or active people but also helps with a wide range of ailments.
Joint strains and muscular injuries
Sports massage helps to loosen tight muscles and increase blood flow which helps in the healing of damaged tissues. Your therapist may use pressure on the injured muscle tissue which assists in the removal of excess fluid.
Lower back pain
A sports massage specifically targets and reduces tension in muscles and soft tissues that are affected by pain or injury.
Tennis elbow
Sports massage therapy can help to break up scar tissue, reduce pain, reduce muscle spasms and improve flexibility,
Pre event massage
If you have a big event coming up (like the Sheffield half marathon) then making massage part of your preparations could make a big difference to your performance and your recovery.
Post event massage
After serious physical exertion like running a marathon or doing Tough Mudder is the perfect time for a massage. The benefits of doing so can be considerable.
Headaches
Much like a deep tissue massage, sports therapy uses firm pressure and slow strokes to massage deeper muscle layers which can help relax strained muscles that may be the source of headache pain.
Poor posture pain relief
A sports massage will soothe overworked and strained muscles, as well as help your body return to its correct and natural alignment.
Routine and rehabilitation
Whether you're looking for a routine maintenance massage or targeted rehabilitation of an old or new injury, sports massage therapy can help to improve flexibility, ease tight muscles, increase blood flow and heal damaged muscles and tissue.
