Information about Thai massages

What does a Thai massage include?
A Thai massage often includes stretching, pressure and a focus on pressure points. A Thai massage can sometimes be done on the floor on a mat but at Origin Massage the sessions happen on a massage bench. The manipulation on the deeper layers of muscles and tendons means that a Thai massage is too strong for some people. If you are at all unsure if this massage style may not be suitable for you please do get in touch and we will help you find something just right for you.
The practice of Thai yoga massage is said to be thousands of years old and is still part of Thailand's medical system due to its perceived healing properties at both physical and emotional level. Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions and the recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked. The receiver will be positioned in a variety of yoga-like positions during the course of the massage, that is also combined with deep static and rhythmic pressures.

What are the benefits of a Thai massage?
Eases tension
By working the muscles and stretching the limbs and ligaments it is possible to reduce tension.
Increased flexibility
The deep massaging of muscles and ligaments allows for a greater range of motion to be possible in most cases.
Improved blood circulation
Massage promotes blood circulation which means many people feel more energetic after a massage.
Reduces stress
A massage can help to reduce levels of the stress hormone noradrenaline as well as cortisol, an indicator of stress.
Improved healing
This may tie in with stress reduction but people who are more relaxed, generally, get less sick less often than those who don't.
Improved sleep
As a result of a Thai massage many people find they deeply relax and unwind which helps them sleep.
What issues could Thai massage help address?
A deep tissue massage like a Thai massage can be especially good for athletic or active people but also helps with a wide range of ailments.
Athletic or active people
The ability to work on the deepest layers of muscles and tendons combined with the stretching elements of Thai massage mean it can be a great massage before a sporting event or after a sporting event. In these circumstances it could also help to reduce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
Reduces headache and migraine
A study at the Khon Kaen University showed that 9 traditional Thai massage sessions over the course of 3 weeks can reduce painful headaches in people who have chronic tension headaches or migraines.
Reduces back pain
Researchers found the effects of Thai massage on people with nonspecific low back pain had significant pain relief, the massages reduced back pain associated with trigger points — tight, painful muscle clusters.
Relieves joint stiffness and pain
Thai massage may improve the function of joints if you experience pain and stiffness when you move. In one study, researchers combined Thai massage with wand exercises on people suffering with knee arthritis and found they felt less pain and walked easier after only 8 weeks.
Increases flexibility and circulation.
The deep massaging of muscles and ligaments allows for a greater range of motion to be possible in most cases. Thai massage has the ability to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to muscles. This, in turn, may help reduce pain and decrease muscle adhesions.
Eases anxiety and revives energy
Thai massage is more energetic than other forms of massage therapy but has been shown to lower anxiety and increase a feeling of calm. Another study showed those suffering with fatigue felt more mentally invigorated after receiving Thai massage.
