How can a massage help before an event?

If you have a big event coming up like a marathon or Tough Mudder then a massage before the event begins could make a big difference.

There are different massage styles that can be appropriate pre-event. One style is to have quite a vigorous massage which really prepares the body for the upcoming event. This stimulating massage style prepares the body as well as the mind.

When can a massage help?

After a large physical exertion, massage can be a fantastic way to tackle a wide range of issues that have the potential to have a big impact. One of the biggest benefits of a massage in these circumstances is that it reduces the severity of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

By softening, stretching and lengthening the muscles which became tight during the event it decreases the effect of DOMS. Getting any kind of massage withing 72 hours of the end of the event could make a huge difference to your recovery. Find out more.

Benefits of a pre-event massage

Reduces stress

Stress affects us all at different times and in different ways. Taking time off from stress helps us deal with future difficult moments in a better way. Let us help you de-stress.

Mental preparation

When you are mentally prepared for the event you are more likely to perform better.

Increased flexibility

The gentle massaging of muscles and ligaments allows for a greater range of motion to be possible in most cases.

Reduces pain

If you suffer with headaches, neck, shoulder or back pain, massage therapy could help to alleviate your symptoms and provide relief.

Reduces risk of injury

Increasing oxygen through massage therapy energises muscles as well as keeping them strong and healthy.

Improved sleep

Sleeping well before an event means that you will have the energy and focus to do well in your event.

Which pre-event massage is best?

The great news is that there is a choice of massage type that could be appropriate to help you prepare for an event. The  main massage styles that could help are Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. Get more details about each below.

The smooth black volcanic stones are heated and smoothed over you skin and worked into muscles in this wonderfully calming and deeply relaxing treatment that can help to reduce muscle tension and pain.
A Swedish massage is a full body massage and is a great way to let go of stress and to unwind. With this can then also come the added benefit of helping you sleep better, among many other possible benefits.
A deep tissue massage therapy session works on the muscles and connective tissue at a deeper level and can assist in bringing relief to muscle soreness as well as speed up recovery for aches, pains and injuries.

I've suffered with sciatica and a stiff achy back and shoulders for many years which was considerably worse during and after my pregnancy. I booked in for a postnatal massage with Fi Hennessy who took time asking me about problematic and sensitive areas, welcomed me to the Sheffield Wellness Centre (amazing place!) and made sure I was comfortable and well looked after.Fi is a remarkable lady who exudes warmth and definitely knows her way around a postnatal body. The relief was incredible, I felt relaxed and peaceful and thoroughly enjoyed being pampered. I had a 1hr session and booked my second appointment before leaving - these sessions have now become part of my self care routine. Fi has a way of making you feel body confident regardless of size or wobbly bits which was inspiring. My mind and body are very thankful for these sessions with Fi 🙂

I had a Post natal Rest and relax massage gifted to me on my baby shower, I have to say it was one of the most amazing massages I’ve ever gotten. I had a lot of mummy guilt leaving my son but honestly feel so much more relaxed which is good for both me and my baby!
